Doxycycline is a man-made tetracycline antibiotic that is prescribed to treat a number of bacterial infections. It works by interrupting the production or growth of proteins by harmful bacteria. Sometimes, this medication is also taken to prevent malaria.
Majorly know as tetracycline, Doxycycline is a drug that has been around for ages and is a member of the tetracycline class. It is an antibiotic that is used in treating a wide range of bacterial infections, the most commonly known one being diarrhea (cholera). It is also used in the treatment of other infections like sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea and Chlamydia.
Other infections like acne, pneumonia and Lyme disease can also be treated by Doxycycline. When used together with quinine, this drug can be used in the treatment of malaria and sometimes in the prevention of malaria. It works by stopping the growth of the bacteria and killing them. Therefore, this drug you cannot use this drug to treat viral infections although sometimes you can use other forms of this drug to treat infections caused by mites, ticks or lice.Dosage and storage
This medicine is usually taken orally but it can also be injected intravenously. Take the capsule with water by either swallowing it whole, or by opening the capsule and then sprinkling its content in water before drinking the water.
You should also take the tablet orally with water by swallowing the whole tablet or breaking into smaller pieces before taking. For the oral suspension, mix the powder with water and then take it orally as syrup. The injection solution is injected directly into the vain and only a qualified health care provider should administer it.
Take the medicine as recommended by your doctor. Do not take more dosage or less dosage than advised. This could lead to other complications, which may be harmful to your health. Take the medicine at least an hour before taking your meals and make sure you take it at the same time every day. If you forget the dosage instructions, call your doctor or check the instruction leaflet enclosed with the medicine. Keep this drug away from direct sunlight and moisture. Store in a cool and dry place but not the refrigerator and keep it away from children. Side effects
Being a broad-spectrum antibiotic does not meant that Doxycycline has no side effects. Some of the side effects include nausea and /or vomiting, diarrhea, itching and/or rashes developing on the skin, and upset stomach.
Any of these side effects can be serious and so you should contact your physician to report any of them. Side effects that are more adverse include blurred vision, loss of appetite, and feeling of confusion together with shortness of breath. Contact your physician immediately if you experience any of these effects. This medicine can make birth control pills less effective. Talk to your doctor about this before starting the dosage.Precaution

Use the correct dosage at the correct time and contact the physician if you miss a dose. Do not take double the dosage if you miss a dose. Take the next dose and talk your health care provider about it. Do not stop taking the medicine even when your symptoms improve but the dosage is not complete, and do not administer your drugs on someone else.
Maintain your hospital appointments as this will ensure that your doctor monitors your progress. Tell your doctor if you have any diseases like liver disease, asthma or kidney disease just to be on the safe side. You should also tell your doctor if you are taking any seizure medicine. Doxycycline should not be taken if one is allergic to the tetracycline class of antibiotics or if one is pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor or health care provider if you are allergic or if you are planning to get pregnant/ gets pregnant while taking this medicine. It has the potential to harm an unborn child or cause tooth discoloration on the baby later on if taken during pregnancy. Children should not use this medicine. Ensure that you store it in a safe place.
