Cytotec is a man-made prostaglandin taken by patients to decrease the risk of stomach ulcers when using NSAIDs and treating pain and different inflammatory medical conditions. Its intake decreases the risk of serious ulcer complications, including bleeding, and protects stomach lining by reducing the amount of acid.
Cytotec, also called misoprostol, is a drug used in the prevention of stomach ulcers that arises from using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as brufen or aspirin. When used together with another drug called mifepriston, it can end pregnancy (cause abortion). For the treatment of ulcers, it works by reducing the amount of acid that is gets in contact with the stomach lining thereby reducing the possibility of gastric ulceration. In abortion, mifepriston causes the separation of the fetus from the uterus lining after which cytotec causes contractions that lead to the expulsion of the fetus. It belongs to the group of prostaglandin drugs. Women who are of childbearing age are discouraged from using this drug as it can cause complications in the uterus.
